What you get
A verandah post carries the roof and sets the proportion of the whole frontage, which is why getting the section and the turning right matters more than any other single piece on a period facade. It is also called a porch post, a veranda post, a pillar or a column. Heritage & Decorative Timber Products makes eight verandah post designs, V1 to V8, including turned and chamfered profiles. Sections are 88 x 88mm, 112 x 112mm and 135 x 135mm, with five standard lengths from 2.4 metres to 3.6 metres; V7 and V8 are available in the two smaller sections only. All are made in Australia and delivered Australia-wide.

For a turned timber post, compare the V1–V5 profiles: the shaft is shaped between square top and bottom sections. V6 is the plainer option, with chamfered or fluted versions. V7 and V8 offer different capital details; compare the actual photograph or profile drawing rather than choosing by code alone.
Match the square section, overall length and position of the decorative detail separately. View the verandah post design photographs, then choose a V-code from the post size and price comparison. For an existing veranda post, send a photograph and measurements for a matching quote.
V1 to V8. V1 through V5 are the five standard turned profiles, with a squared base and capital and a turned shaft between them, and V3 is also made as V3B. V6 is a lighter, plainer post and is the one to ask about if you want it chamfered or fluted rather than turned; it comes as V6, V6B and V6H. V7 is made plain, fluted (V7F), or fluted with a handrail block (V7FH) — that block is what a balustrade rail fixes into, so specify it at order time rather than cutting one in later. V8 is the heaviest design in the range. The range includes Federation and Victorian verandah post designs, and the eight designs are photographed square-on if you are settling the design before the size.
Squared sections are 88 x 88mm, 112 x 112mm and 135 x 135mm. Standard lengths across the range are 2.4m, 2.7m, 3.0m, 3.3m and 3.6m — five steps of 300mm. For V7, V7F and V7FH, the 88 × 88mm section stops at 3.3m; the 112 × 112mm section also comes in 3.6m. Check the selected design and section on its price sheet. Confirm the required overall length and structural specification with your builder before ordering. The three sections apply across V1 to V6; V7 and V8 are made in 88 x 88mm and 112 x 112mm only, so if you need a 135mm post choose from V1 to V6. Posts can also be custom made to suit the size and style of the house if none of the eight suits.

Every one of our verandah posts is made from LOSP H3 treated pine in Australia. The range includes turned and chamfered profiles. The H3 hazard rating covers exterior timber used above ground, protecting the post against fungal decay and insect attack — which is what takes out the base of an old verandah post first, at the point where it meets the deck and stays wet. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our posts carry our 25 year guarantee. Prime all six faces, including both end grains, with two thin coats of oil-based primer before the post goes up, then topcoat. Priming before installation helps protect the faces and end grain that become inaccessible once the post is fixed.
The most accurate method is to send us the original. Prop and support the verandah roof properly first, ease the post out so the profile stays intact, and drop it in to the Bayswater workshop or freight it — never remove a load-bearing post before the structure is supported, and get a builder in if you are unsure. If the post cannot come out, photograph it instead: one full-length shot with a tape measure laid flat alongside it, then close-ups of the capital, every turned section, any chamfer or moulding, and the base or plinth, all taken square-on in daylight. Add the floor-to-beam height. Clear photographs and measurements help the workshop assess the profile; send the original piece where practical for the most accurate comparison. Ask about our timber-profile matching service. Call 03 9720 1996.

Verandah rafters, post caps and post tops, pyramid caps, capitols and fence post caps all finish the post itself. Corner brackets fill the angle at the head of the post, and fretwork or a frieze panel fills the bay between one post and the next.
Match the squared section, overall length and position of the turning separately. A similar silhouette alone does not show whether the base, capital and handrail fixing points line up with the existing verandah. Include those details in your enquiry, and mark which measurements come from a surviving post and which come from the opening. Have your builder confirm the required structural specification before selecting a decorative profile.
For a repair, send a full-length photograph and close-ups of the surviving details. If the bottom has decayed, say so rather than treating the remaining length as the original length. The guide to matching a damaged verandah post explains what to photograph before requesting a replacement. Compare the V-code, section and length together on the pricing page; ask for confirmation where the combination is not listed. Add your quantity and delivery postcode so the enquiry covers the complete order.

Each price sheet identifies the design, squared section and overall length. Prices are per post; check any separate caps, capitals or droppers your order needs. Choose the V-code that matches the profile:

Talk directly with the workshop at 852 Mountain Highway, Bayswater, before ordering a replacement post or a full verandah. Bring together the profile code, square section, overall length and quantity so your quote covers the complete job. If visiting with a sample, call 03 9720 1996 first to discuss what to bring and the best time to visit.
A single replacement needs to match the height of the turning and the square top and bottom, not just its outline. Photograph a surviving post square-on and show a tape measure beside it. Where the base has rotted, include the opening height and explain what is missing. Your builder should establish the required structural specification before removal or installation.
The metro Melbourne delivery rate is $55; the regional Victorian rate is $150. Include your postcode, access details and the complete list of posts and adjoining components so the workshop can confirm your delivery quote. Ask about current manufacture and delivery timing before scheduling your installer.
For painted external LOSP H3 pine, follow our priming and care instructions before installation. For a profile outside the standard range, use the custom timber matching enquiry to send photographs, measurements or sample details.
