Premium Timber Stair Kits — LOSP Pine, CCA Pine & Merbau

A premium stair kit is a complete flight, delivered as a set of parts cut to your rise and ready to bolt together on site. It is the difference between a carpenter spending a day setting out stringers and spending an hour assembling them.

What you get

  • Australian made — every product, made in our Bayswater workshop since 1984
  • 25 year guarantee — on external LOSP H3 treated pine, above ground
  • An answer within one business day — we reply to enquiries and quote requests
  • In stock, or made in 1 to 4 weeks — some of the range is in stock; the rest is made to order
  • Timber-profile matching — from a photograph, drawing or sample

What makes a kit "premium"

Two things.

The going. The going is the depth of each step. The premium kits made by Heritage & Decorative Timber Products are built on a 290mm going rather than the standard 240mm, which gives a shallower, more comfortable gradient. It reads much better on the approach to a front door and it is noticeably kinder on knees. A 240mm going is not worse — it is the right answer where horizontal room is tight — but 290mm is what "premium" means in our range.

How the timber is prepared. Our LOSP pine stringers are treated after manufacturing, so every housing, every cut and every machined face is sealed rather than left open at the ends. And the stock is dressing-grade clears (DAR), not standard knotted H3 pine.

What is in the kit

  • Two stringers (sides) with housing joints
  • Treads, in the number your rise requires
  • Aluminium stair nosing fitted to each tread, with non-slip tape applied in black
  • Galvanised 10mm booker (threaded) rod with flush cap nuts
  • Two galvanised angle brackets per tread, with 6/12g x 30mm hex head screws
  • A sawtooth centre support, included on any kit over 1200mm wide

Sizes

Kits are made from 900mm to 5400mm wide, in flights up to eighteen steps. The commonly stocked widths are 990mm, 1200mm, 1800mm and 2400mm. On a 990mm kit the internal step width is 945mm and the complete external width is 1035mm.

Which timber, and which one is guaranteed

LOSP treated pine — H3 rated for outdoor use above ground, takes paint cleanly, and suits stairs on show at an entrance. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, it carries our 25 year guarantee. That guarantee depends on the timber being primed and painted correctly before the flight is assembled — see our painting instructions.

CCA pine — a water-borne treatment, robust and cost-effective, for hard-working structural steps.

Merbau — a dense hardwood chosen where you want the timber itself to be the feature under a stain or an oil.

Neither CCA nor Merbau is covered by the LOSP guarantee. The guarantee is tied to the LOSP H3 treatment, not to durability in general, so it is a warranty distinction rather than a quality ranking. If a written guarantee is part of what you are buying, specify LOSP.

How to order

Measure the rise — finished ground level to the top of the deck or landing — and the going, how far the flight can project without crowding a path or a garden bed. Those two numbers fix the number of treads. Then tell us the width and the timber. If your figures land between sizes, say so; stairs are made to your rise rather than to a template.

Use the outdoor stair measuring guide to record the total rise, available horizontal projection and required width separately. The stair calculator helps prepare an enquiry; confirm the final dimensions, structural requirements and installation with your builder before ordering. Include the material, kit or stringers-only choice and delivery postcode in your quote enquiry.
