Merbau Stair Kits & Stringers

Merbau is the hardwood option in the Heritage & Decorative Timber Products stair range, and it is chosen for one reason: you want to see the timber. Where LOSP and CCA pine are bought to be painted, Merbau is bought to be oiled or stained, so the grain and the deep red-brown colour become part of the deck rather than being covered over.

Why people choose Merbau for outdoor stairs

It is a dense tropical hardwood with real natural durability and a warm colour that suits a modern deck as readily as a period verandah. If the rest of your decking is Merbau, the stairs should be too — a painted pine flight running off a Merbau deck is the sort of detail nobody can name but everybody notices.

What the guarantee does and does not cover

Our 25 year guarantee applies to external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground. It does not apply to Merbau, and it does not apply to CCA pine. That is worth stating plainly on this page rather than in small print. The guarantee is tied to the LOSP treatment, not to timber durability in general — Merbau's durability comes from the species itself, and it is sold on that basis, not on ours. If a written guarantee is what matters most to you, order the same stair in LOSP pine.

What is in a Merbau kit

Stringers, treads in the number your rise requires, and a sawtooth centre support on any flight over 1200mm wide. Stringers can also be bought on their own, supplied with batten screws, treads not included — a common order when the treads are coming off the same pack as the deck.

Sizes

Kits are made from 900mm to 5400mm wide, in flights up to eighteen steps. On a 990mm kit the internal step width is 945mm and the complete external width is 1035mm.

240mm or 290mm going

The going is the depth of each step. 240mm gains height in a shorter footprint and suits tighter spaces and steeper flights. 290mm gives a shallower, more comfortable gradient — worth the extra projection at a main entrance. Both goings are available in Merbau.

The rest of the flight in Merbau

Sawtooth centre supports and flight balustrades are both made in Merbau, so a whole stair — stringers, treads, centre support, raking balustrade and 1200mm flight newel posts — can be built in one timber rather than assembled from two.

How to order

Measure the rise — finished ground level to the top of the deck or landing — and decide how far the flight can project. Those two numbers give the tread count. Then tell us the width, the going, and whether you want a complete kit or stringers only. Every flight is cut to your actual rise.

Use the outdoor stair measuring guide to record the total rise, available horizontal projection and required width separately. The stair calculator helps prepare an enquiry; confirm the final dimensions, structural requirements and installation with your builder before ordering. Include the material, kit or stringers-only choice and delivery postcode in your quote enquiry.

We offer 3 main types of timber - LOSP Pine, CCA Pine and Merbau - giving you a choice in the texture as well as design. Kits are available in 240mm or 290mm material.

What is included in a Merbau stair kit?

The kit includes stringers, treads and a sawtooth centre support when the stair is over 1200mm wide. Stringers can also be bought on their own with batten screws, in which case treads are not included.
