Timber Privacy Screens — Decorative Fretwork Panels
A timber privacy screen is a decorative fretwork panel that breaks a sightline without walling anything in. Heritage & Decorative Timber Products makes them at a standard 1200 x 600mm in twenty-three patterns, or custom made to your own size. They go between posts, along a fence line, across the open end of a deck, or in front of the things you would rather not look at — bins, a hot water service, an air-conditioning unit. All of them are made in Australia.

Which patterns are available, and what size are they?
Twenty-three designs, coded SA1PS through to SA23PS. Twenty-two of them are photographed; SA7PS is made but not pictured, which is why the images stop at twenty-two. Every one of them is made at 1200 x 600mm as standard, and any of them can be made to your size instead. Because the panel size is fixed as standard, it is worth setting your posts out to suit it before you order — a screen that lands neatly between two posts needs no packing, no trimming and no trim strip to hide the gap.
Why do the screen codes match the frieze panel codes?
Because it is one family of fretwork patterns applied to three different products. SA1PS is the privacy screen, SA1FW is the external verandah frieze panel, and SA1WP is the interior window pelmet, and all three carry the same design. That is the useful thing about ordering from this range: a courtyard screen can repeat the pattern already running across the front verandah, rather than introducing a second decorative language to the same house.

How much can you actually see through one?
That depends entirely on the pattern you pick, which is the decision most people rush. A dense, fine fretwork leaves little to see through and casts a tight shadow; an open pattern keeps a courtyard feeling light and lets more of the garden read through it. A screen filters a view rather than blocking it, so if what you want is a solid barrier, you want a fence or a gate instead. The same openness that softens the sightline also lets air through, which matters when the screen is going in front of an air-conditioning condenser or a hot water unit — keep the clearances the equipment manufacturer asks for.
What timber are they made from, and are they guaranteed?
Our privacy screens are produced in a variety of timbers according to your needs, so the timber is a decision you make at the time of order rather than a fixed specification — and that decides the guarantee. Where a screen is made in external LOSP H3 treated pine and used above ground, it carries our 25 year guarantee. Where you have chosen another species, it does not. Tell us which you want and we will tell you where you stand. Whatever the timber, prime and paint or seal all faces before the screen is fixed, including the edges of the fretwork.

Are these screen doors?
A privacy screen is a fixed panel; a screen door is a hinged door with flywire in it. We make both, and the two ranges are separate — if you want a fretwork door rather than a fixed panel, that is our screen door range.
For a made-to-size panel, send the opening width and height, a photograph of the fixing position and the selected pattern code. Identify whether the screen will fit inside the opening or cover its face, and confirm the finished panel dimensions before manufacture. The guide to coordinating fretwork, pelmets and privacy screens shows how the related pattern families work together.
Ask about our timber-profile matching service. A pattern from an existing screen or verandah can be copied. Australian made, delivered to your home or site. Call 03 9720 1996.
