Heritage Timber Screen Doors — Made to Your Door Frame Size

A timber screen door restores a visible piece of joinery to a period entrance, with a pattern chosen to suit the house. A fretted timber screen sits in front of the entrance door as joinery, not as a security grille. It is also called a flyscreen door or a fly door. This decorative timber range has no published security rating; if security performance is part of your brief, confirm that requirement before choosing a door. Every door Heritage & Decorative Timber Products makes is built to the size of your door frame, in LOSP treated pine, 18mm to 30mm thick, with the beading to hold the flywire included.

Which screen door patterns do you make?

Sixteen: SD3, SD4, SD5, SD6, SD7, SD8, SD9, SD10, SD13, SD16 and SD17, plus SDB1 to SDB4 and SDS1. They run from a plain framed panel through to fretted and turned detailing, so you can pitch the door to the era of the house. Every door is made to order, and there is no stock size. Period and screen doors are photographed together, some of them in the workshop rather than installed.

What size and thickness are they made to?

We make each door to your specifications: you give us the size of your door frame and the screen door is built to suit it, so it hangs true and closes cleanly rather than being packed out to fit an opening it was never cut for. Thicknesses run from 18mm to 30mm, chosen for the size of the door and how hard it will be used. Beading to hold the flywire is included with every door.

What timber are your screen doors made from?

Our screen doors are made from LOSP treated pine — H3 rated for outdoor use above ground, dimensionally stable and clean to paint. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our screen doors carry our 25 year guarantee. Custom species are available on request, but a door made in another timber is not covered by the LOSP guarantee.

How do I measure for a screen door?

Measure the height and width of the door reveal, not the existing door — an old screen door has usually been trimmed, packed or rehung at least once. Keep the opening measurements distinct from the finished door dimensions and confirm the fitting allowances before manufacture. Note which way the opening swings and whether the screen will sit in front of a hinged or a sliding entrance, then tell us the pattern and thickness you want. A photograph of the entrance taken square-on helps us keep the fretting in proportion: a pattern that suits a wide Victorian doorway looks cramped on a narrow one. Hang the door on quality hinges with a closer to suit daily use.

How should a screen door be painted?

Apply two thin coats of oil-based primer to all six faces before the door is hung, including the top and bottom edges and any cut ends. LOSP treatment carries solvents that an oil-based primer bonds with, so acrylic is not a substitute at that stage. Keep the timber dry, leave it at least 72 hours after delivery to acclimatise, then apply two or three thin topcoats and inspect the coating annually.

Can you copy an original, or match a front door to a back one?

Yes, and both are common jobs. Send a photograph or the original door and we will reproduce the pattern and the proportions; matching a rear entrance to a front one is the same exercise in reverse. Ask about our timber-profile matching service. If you want the same fretted look as a fixed panel rather than a door, our privacy screens are made the same way.
