CCA Treated Pine Stair Kits & Stringers

A CCA pine stair kit is the workhorse of the three Heritage & Decorative Timber Products stair ranges: a complete outdoor flight, cut to your rise, in a robust water-borne treated pine. It is the timber to choose when the stairs have a job to do and the finish matters less than the cost per step.

What CCA is, and where it belongs

CCA is a water-borne preservative treatment. The result is a tough, cost-effective structural pine that resists rot and insect attack and copes with weather. It is the traditional choice for hard-working outdoor steps — back stairs, service access, a flight down to a shed or a lawn, a ramp landing, anything that will be painted plainly or simply left to weather.

It is not the timber for a set of stairs at the front door under a light. For that, look at LOSP.

Be clear about the guarantee

Our 25 year guarantee applies to external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground. It does not apply to CCA pine, and it does not apply to Merbau. The guarantee is tied to the LOSP treatment, not to general durability, so it is not a comment on how long a CCA stair will last — it is simply a different product with a different warranty position. If a written 25 year guarantee is what you are buying, order the same stair in LOSP. If cost per step is what you are buying, CCA is why this page exists.

Sizes and what is in the kit

Kits are built from 900mm to 5400mm wide. Every kit includes stringers, treads in the number your rise requires, and a sawtooth centre support on any flight over 1200mm wide — because at that width treads will deflect between two stringers alone. On a 990mm kit the internal step width is 945mm and the complete external width is 1035mm. Flights run to eighteen steps.

Stringers can also be bought on their own, supplied with batten screws, treads not included.

240mm or 290mm going

The going is the depth of each step. 240mm climbs in a shorter footprint and suits tighter spaces and steeper flights — it is the standard domestic option and the one most CCA stairs are built in. 290mm gives a shallower, more comfortable gradient where you have the horizontal room to spend. Both are made in CCA.

How to order

Measure the rise, from finished ground level to the top of the deck or landing, and work out the going — how far the flight can project without crowding a path, a bed or a boundary. Those two figures give the tread count. Then tell us the width, the going and whether you want a kit or stringers only. Every flight is cut to your actual rise, so there is no need to make your build fit a standard.

Use the outdoor stair measuring guide to record the total rise, available horizontal projection and required width separately. The stair calculator helps prepare an enquiry; confirm the final dimensions, structural requirements and installation with your builder before ordering. Include the material, kit or stringers-only choice and delivery postcode in your quote enquiry.

Product and ordering questions

What timbers do the stair kits come in?

We offer 3 main types of timber - LOSP Pine, CCA Pine and Merbau - giving you a choice in the texture as well as design. Kits are available in 240mm or 290mm material.

What is included in a CCA pine stair kit?

The kit includes stringers, treads and a sawtooth centre support when the stair is over 1200mm wide. Stringers can also be bought on their own with batten screws, in which case treads are not included.
