V5 Federation Verandah Post — Sections, Lengths & Prices

The V5 is the last of the five turned Federation posts in the Heritage & Decorative Timber Products range. Restorers usually arrive at a specific profile because they are copying something. If you are building new — a pergola, a carport, a front porch on a house that never had one, an outdoor room off the back — you get to choose freely, and this page is as good a starting point as any.

Still choosing a profile? Compare all V1–V8 timber verandah posts, including sections and lengths, before selecting your V5 size below.

Choosing a post for new work

Two decisions, in this order. First the section, because it sets the proportion: 88 x 88mm reads light and suits a small porch or a narrow return; 112 x 112mm is the safe middle and looks right on most frontages; 135 x 135mm gives you a substantial post for a wide opening. Then the turning, because it sets the period. All five Federation profiles cost the same at any given size, so the shape is a free choice — there is no cheap option to compromise on. The V4 is the fourth of the five; if you would rather have a square shaft chamfered or fluted than a turned one, that is the V6.

V5 sections and lengths

88 x 88mm, 112 x 112mm and 135 x 135mm, each made in 2.4m, 2.7m, 3.0m, 3.3m and 3.6m. Every combination is priced below.

Measuring for new work

Set the beam height first, then measure from the finished floor level to the underside of the beam. Order the next length up rather than the next length down — a post can be cut to suit on site, but it cannot be stretched. Allow for the fall in the verandah floor if there is one.

Timber and guarantee

LOSP treated pine, H3 rated for outdoor use above ground. The preservative is carried in a light organic solvent rather than water, so the timber stays dimensionally stable and the turning holds its detail — and it takes paint properly. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, these posts carry our 25 year guarantee.

Finishing

Two thin coats of oil-based primer on all six faces before installation, no painting until the timber has had at least 72 hours after delivery to acclimatise, then two to three thin topcoats in acrylic, water-based or oil-based paint. After that, an annual look over and a touch-up wherever the film has broken.

To complete the verandah

Matching V5D droppers, post caps and capitals, corner brackets at the post head, and fretwork or a frieze panel between the posts.

Product and ordering questions

What sections and lengths does the V5 verandah post come in?

88 x 88mm, 112 x 112mm and 135 x 135mm, each made in 2.4m, 2.7m, 3.0m, 3.3m and 3.6m. Every combination is priced.

How do I measure for a verandah post on new work?

Set the beam height first, then measure from the finished floor level to the underside of the beam. Order the next length up rather than the next length down - a post can be cut to suit on site, but it cannot be stretched. Allow for the fall in the verandah floor if there is one.
