Sawtooth Stair Centre Support — 1 to 18 Treads
A sawtooth centre support is the stepped timber spine that runs up the middle of a wide staircase, under the treads, between the two stringers. It is a structural part rather than a decorative one, and it is the piece most people building a wide deck stair forget to allow for.

What it does
A tread is only supported at its two ends by the stringers. Make the flight wide enough and the middle of every tread starts to give underfoot — the flex you feel on a set of stairs that were built a little optimistically. A sawtooth support carries the treads at their centre, so the flight feels solid across its full width instead of only near the sides.
When do I need one?
Any staircase over 1200mm wide. Below that, two stringers do the job. Above it, put a sawtooth down the middle. If you are ordering one of the complete Heritage & Decorative Timber Products stair kits and it is over 1200mm wide, the sawtooth is already included — you do not need to order it separately. This page is for people building their own flight, widening an existing one, or replacing a support that has gone.
The three timbers
Made in all three of our stair timbers, so the support matches the flight it is going into:
- LOSP treated pine (KLSAW) — H3 rated for outdoor use above ground. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, this is the version that carries our 25 year guarantee.
- CCA pine (KCSAW) — a robust water-borne treated pine for hard-working structural work.
- Merbau (KMSAW) — the hardwood option, for a flight built in Merbau.
Neither the CCA nor the Merbau sawtooth is covered by the LOSP guarantee. It attaches to the LOSP H3 treatment, not to the product type.
Sizes and what is included
Made from 1 to 18 treads. The standard support suits a 240mm going with a 165mm step rise. Assembly instructions are included. Treads are not included — a sawtooth is the support, not the steps.
Custom rises are available. If your rise does not divide neatly into 165mm steps — and on a real deck it very often does not — tell us the total rise and the number of treads and we will cut the support to suit rather than asking you to pack it out on site.
How to order
Tell us four things: the number of treads, the going, the total rise from finished ground level to the top of the deck, and the timber. If you already have the stringers, give us their going and rise and we will match the sawtooth to them.

When do I need a sawtooth centre support?
Sawtooth centre supports suit any staircase which is over 1200mm wide, and are great for the front or rear entrances of homes or deckings.
