A front door is the one piece of joinery every visitor touches. On a Victorian or Federation house it is also the element most often replaced with something flush and modern, which is why a period-correct door does more for a frontage than almost anything else you can hang.
What is actually shown here?
Period door designs — panelled and arched-panel doors, and timber screen doors. Some of the photographs are of doors in the workshop rather than installed. Heritage & Decorative Timber Products does not claim the buildings shown are its projects; the images are here as design reference.
What do you make?
Timber screen doors are the standard range, made to your opening. A screen door is the one that has to fit an existing frame exactly, and period openings are rarely square, so they are made to measure rather than bought off a shelf.
We also make hardwood doors, and doors with arched heads to suit an arched opening.
Because a door is a made-to-order item rather than a fixed size, the ordering question is not "which size do you stock" but "what is the opening" — see below.
How do I measure a door opening?
Measure the height and the width of the clear opening, and take each one in three places — top, middle and bottom for the width; both jambs and the centre for the height. Period frames move, and the smallest of the three measurements is usually the one that governs. Note which way the door swings and which side the hinges are on. Photograph the opening square-on with a tape measure in the frame.
If you are copying a door that is already there, photograph it square-on and add close-ups of the mouldings around each panel — the panel mould is what makes a reproduction read as original.
What timber and what finish?
External doors are made from LOSP H3 treated pine unless specified as hardwood. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground they carry our 25 year guarantee — hardwood doors do not fall under it. Prime with two thin coats of oil-based primer on all six sides before hanging.
