Timber Handrails

Two timber handrails run as stock — HR1 and HR2, in finger-jointed LOSP treated pine, by the lineal metre. Behind them sit seventeen more, HR3 to HR19, which exist for one reason: somebody brought us a rail and asked for it again. If the handrail on your verandah, balcony or stair is split, worn smooth, painted flat or simply no longer made, we cut a new one to the same section.

HR1, HR2 and BR2: handrail and base rail profiles
HR1 and HR2 are the two handrails we hold. Both are finger-jointed LOSP treated pine, both are rebated along the underside to receive the balusters, and both are supplied and priced by the lineal metre — the figure on the price list is the rate, so a four metre run is four times it.
HR2 is the deeper section of the two, at 85 × 65 mm. HR1 is the narrower, at 65 mm wide. Under the balusters runs the BR2ASL base rail at 65 × 42 mm, with a fillet closing the rebate between the two — the standard rebate is 19 mm wide by 12 mm deep and the FIL19A fillet fills it. A wider fillet is made for a wider rebate.
Either handrail can be had on any of our assembled balustrade patterns — BS1, BS4, BS5 and BS6 — whether the panel is assembled level at 900 mm overall, supplied in kit form, or flight assembled to the angle of your stair. See timber balustrades for the panels themselves and flight balustrades for the raking version.

HR3–HR19 timber handrail profiles
HR3–HR19 are established profile designs made to order. Each shown profile is $60 per lineal metre. Send the required length and confirm the finished section and timber with the workshop.
They are drawn here as sections: you are looking at the end of the rail, as if it had been sawn straight through. That is the view that matters when you are trying to tell whether a shape will sit right on a period house. Select any profile to see it larger. Sizes are set by your job and confirmed on your quotation.
Seventeen is simply where the count stands. The list is not the offer — the offer is the next one.

How to match an existing timber handrail
Need help documenting your existing rail? See how to record a timber profile for matching
Matching a discontinued profile is the core of this workshop. We can work from a photograph, drawing or sample. A small job — one verandah, one flight of stairs, one bay repaired after a storm — is welcome.

- Best: send an offcut. A short cut-off from the end of the run tells us everything at once — every bead, every quirk, the exact depth of the rebate. Nothing is scaled or guessed from it.
- Cannot cut one out? Photograph the end square-on. Lay a tape measure flat against the end of the rail with the numbers legible, hold the camera level with it rather than above it, and shoot in daylight. A square-on photograph of the end grain is what lets us read the true section.
- Then photograph the run. One shot of the whole length, then close-ups of anything the section does not show — how the rail meets the post, how it returns at a corner, how it rakes into the stair.
- Tell us the metres. Total the clear length between each pair of posts and add the spans together; handrail is priced by the lineal metre. Say whether each run is level or raking to a stair angle, and which timber you want it in.
- We confirm the matching profile before manufacture. HR1–HR19 catalogue profiles are $60 per lineal metre; a bespoke section outside that range is quoted separately.
Guarantee25 years
25 years, external LOSP H3, above ground.
Our handrails and base rails are made from LOSP H3 treated pine. LOSP is a light organic solvent-borne preservative: because the preservative is not carried into the grain by water, the timber holds its shape and keeps the crisp machined detail a period profile depends on. H3 is Australia’s hazard class for timber used outdoors and above the ground — exposed to weather, but not standing in soil.
As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our handrails carry our 25 year guarantee. Merbau is a hardwood and is not covered by it; nor is clear pine, which is untreated. Those are chosen when you want grain under a stain or an oil rather than paint.
The guarantee depends on the coating being kept up. A handrail is the one part of a balustrade that is touched every day, so it wears first: prime and paint every face before it goes up, then check it once a year and make good anywhere the paint has broken down.
FinishingBefore the rail goes up, not after
Oil-based primer, two thin coats, all faces.
Handrails are supplied unpainted. LOSP treatment carries solvents that an oil-based primer bonds with, so an acrylic primer is not a substitute at that stage. Two thin coats on every face, including the rebated underside and both cut ends, and before the rail is fixed — a face you cannot reach once the balustrade is up is a face that will never be painted again.
Keep the timber dry and leave it at least 72 hours after delivery to acclimatise before you start. After the primer, two or three thin topcoats, acrylic, water-based or oil-based, to match the rest of the house.
PricingBy the lineal metre
Handrail and base rail prices per metre
HR1–HR19 handrail profiles are $60 per lineal metre. Base rails have their own published rates. A bespoke profile outside these nineteen designs is quoted separately after reviewing your sample or measurements.

Tell us which rail.
If it is HR1 or HR2, give us the code and the metres and we will come back with a price and a lead time. If it is a rail already on the building, say so and send a photograph — the end of the rail, square-on, with a tape measure against it. We will tell you whether one of the nineteen sections we already hold is your rail, and quote the match if it is not.

Product and ordering questions
Can you match a timber handrail that is no longer made?
Yes. Send a short offcut from the end of the run, or a square-on photograph of the end of the rail with a tape measure laid against it, and we cut a new handrail to the same section. Our most competitive pricing is for timber-profile matching runs under 150 lineal metres.
Which timber handrail profiles do you hold as stock?
HR1ASL and HR2ASL, both in finger-jointed LOSP treated pine and both sold by the lineal metre. HR2 is the deeper section at 85 x 65 mm. A further seventeen profiles, HR3 to HR19, have been cut to match customers' own rails.
What timber are your handrails made from?
Finger-jointed LOSP H3 treated pine. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our handrails carry our 25 year guarantee. Merbau is a hardwood and is not covered by that guarantee.
How is a timber handrail priced?
HR1–HR19 handrail profiles are $60 per lineal metre. Measure and add the clear spans between posts. Bespoke profiles outside this range, freight and project-specific details are confirmed in your written quote.
