Droppers — V1D to V5D

A dropper is the short turned pendant that hangs down from the verandah beam, usually at the head of a bay or either side of a frieze panel. It is the detail that stops a verandah beam reading as a bare piece of timber.

The suffix is the point: V1D matches the V1 verandah post, V2D matches V2, and so on through to V5D. Turned to the same profile as the post it hangs beside, so the verandah reads as one design rather than as parts from two catalogues. If you know which post you have, you know which dropper you want.

Droppers are priced each, in two sections: 88 x 42mm and 112 x 54mm. Match the section to the post — the 88 x 42mm dropper against an 88 x 88mm post, the 112 x 54mm against a 112 x 112mm.

Newel posts — N4 and N5

A newel is the heavy post at the end of a balustrade run — at the top or bottom of a flight of steps, at a corner, or where a run of balustrade stops. It takes the load of the handrail and it is what everything else is set out from, so it is always a bigger section than a baluster.

Four designs are priced: N4A, N4B, N5A and N5B, in two squared sections — 88 x 88mm and 112 x 112mm — and three lengths: 1.2m, 1.5m and 1.8m. The A and B versions of each design are priced differently, so check which you are ordering.

Choosing a length: measure from the finished floor or tread up to the height you want the newel to finish, and allow for whatever sits below the floor line if the post is being fixed through. Order longer rather than shorter — a newel can be cut down.

Corbels — turned and carved

A corbel is the shaped bracket that supports a shelf, a beam end, a mantel or a hood. Two families are priced here:

  • Turned corbels No. 7, 8 and 9 — 88mm wide and 42mm deep, in three lengths: 440mm, 395mm and 365mm.
  • Carved corbels No. 1, 2, 3 and 2S — from a 380mm tall No. 1 with a 90mm face and 85mm depth, down to the compact 2S at 222mm tall with a 70mm face.

Corbels are made from clear pine, which is untreated. That is deliberate — clear pine takes a stain beautifully and is the right choice for interior work. But it also means corbels are not covered by the Heritage & Decorative Timber Products 25 year guarantee, which applies to external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground. If a corbel is going outside, it must be fully sealed on every face and every end before installation and kept that way. Ask us about a treated option before you order an external one.

Timber and guarantee, in short

Droppers and newels are treated pine — as external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, they carry our 25 year guarantee. Corner and eaves bracket prices are on a separate list. Corbels are clear (untreated) pine and are not covered.

Product and ordering questions

What is the difference between a dropper and a newel?

A dropper is the short turned pendant that hangs down from the verandah beam, usually at the head of a bay or either side of a frieze panel. A newel is the heavy post at the end of a balustrade run, which takes the load of the handrail and is what everything else is set out from. Droppers hang, newels stand, corbels support.

Which dropper matches my verandah post?

The suffix is the point: V1D matches the V1 verandah post, V2D matches V2, and so on through to V5D. Each dropper is turned to the same profile as the post it hangs beside, so the verandah reads as one design rather than as parts from two catalogues.
