Timber Verandah Rafter Prices — Bullnose, Concave, Convex & Olde Gothic
A verandah rafter is the shaped timber that carries the roof out from the wall to the front beam. On a period verandah it is not a straight member: the curve cut into its top edge is what gives a bullnose or a concave verandah its profile, and it is why a heritage verandah roof looks nothing like a modern lean-to.

Price confirmation before ordering
† RAF35120, RAF4535120 — two of our own records give different figures for these codes, and the difference is not explained by anything in them. The price above is the one published on this website; we confirm it in writing before anything is made.

What you get
- Australian made — every product, made in our Bayswater workshop since 1984
- 25 year guarantee — on external LOSP H3 treated pine, above ground
- An answer within one business day — we reply to enquiries and quote requests
- In stock, or made in 1 to 4 weeks — some of the range is in stock; the rest is made to order
- Timber-profile matching — from a photograph, drawing or sample
The four profiles
- Bullnose — the tight convex curve that rolls over at the front. The classic Victorian verandah roof.
- Convex — a gentler outward curve across the run.
- Concave — curving the other way, sweeping down and out. Common on Federation frontages.
- Olde Gothic — the steeper, more pronounced profile.
The curve of the rafter has to match the roll of your roofing, so if you are matching an existing verandah, tell us what the sheeting does before you choose from a photograph.

Three depths, and how to pick one
Rafters are made in three depths — 90mm, 120mm and 140mm — and the depth you need is driven by the span:
| Depth | Lengths made |
|---|---|
| 90mm | 1.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m |
| 120mm | 2.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m, 3.5m |
| 140mm | 2.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m, 3.5m, 4.0m |
The longer the rafter, the deeper it needs to be, which is why the 90mm stops at 3.0m and only the 140mm is made at 4.0m. A verandah roof is structure. Use the table as a guide to what Heritage & Decorative Timber Products makes, and have your builder confirm the size for your span, spacing and roof load.
Common rafters and hip rafters
Every depth and length is priced three ways:
Standard — the common rafter, the one repeated at your spacing along the run. Most of your order is these.
22.5° hip to suit — the hip rafter for a corner turned at 22.5 degrees, such as an angled or splayed bay.
45° hip to suit — the hip rafter for a square corner, which is what a wrap-around or return verandah needs at each external corner.
Eaves brackets hang beneath the eaves along the same run and are priced on their own list.
A hip rafter runs diagonally from the corner of the wall plate out to the corner of the beam, so it is longer than the commons around it and it is cut on a compound angle. "To suit 2.5m" means the hip that goes with a 2.5m common rafter — order the hip by the common it works with, not by its own length.

How to order
- Measure the run from the wall to the outer beam — the beam the verandah posts stand up. That is your rafter length; round up to the next size we make.
- Decide the spacing and count the common rafters along the frontage.
- Count the corners. Every external corner on a return or wrap-around verandah needs a hip. Note whether each is square (45°) or splayed (22.5°).
- Tell us the curve — bullnose, convex, concave or Olde Gothic — and the roll of your roofing.
Any length and any radius of curve can be made to suit the roll of the roofing, and other species and sizes are available on request. If you are replacing rafters on an existing verandah and can get one down safely, send it: copying the original is the surest way to match the curve.
Timber and guarantee
LOSP treated pine, H3 rated for outdoor use above ground. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our rafters carry a 25 year guarantee. Prime all faces with two thin coats of oil-based primer before they go up — including the cut ends, which is where a rafter takes water once the roofing is on.
